Milford hosted Walled Lake Western in the final game of the regular season on Thursday. After suffering two losses at the hands of the Warriors earlier in the season, the Mavericks were focused and ready to compete. Before Thursday’s meeting, Milford was able to string together a handful of quality performances and bring that confidence into their last contest. The Mavs came out strong, outscoring Western 20-11 in the first half. Keeping the tempo up and being unselfish on offense allowed seven Milford players to score in the first two quarters. The Warriors bounced back after halftime and cut into Milford’s lead, trailing 22-20 going into the fourth quarter. The game slowed and became scrappy with each team trying to capitalize on loose balls and rebounds. Milford went 0-for-7 at the free throw line in the fourth (2-for-16 total), and Western went 0-for-8 (3-for-17 total). Maddy Schultz scored the lone field goal in the fourth quarter, giving the Mavericks a 24-20 lead that they were able to hold on to. Despite their lack of offense in the second half, Milford was able to stay poised and blank the Warriors in the fourth quarter. Leading the scoring for Milford was Kayla Leatch with 6 points and Brooke Mathison with 4 points. The Mavericks played their best basketball towards the end of the season, sporting a 3-1 record over the final four games and finishing with an overall record of 6-8. The athletes showed a lot of heart and commitment by always working hard and improving, being great teammates, and staying engaged in practices and games throughout the long, grueling season. Congratulations on your season, Mavericks! To everyone who came out and supported the team, dropped off and picked up players from practice, or just checked out the game recaps to stay updated on Milford athletics, thank you!
