The Mavs made the two hour trip Saturday afternoon to Kalamazoo to take on the Portage Northern Huskies in a South West Michigan Showcase game.
Milford fell behind early in the second period 4-0 before Tyler Conklin scored from Kaz Bowring after a Milford time out to make it 4-1 with plenty of game left. But the Huskies countered late in the period to take a commanding 5-1 lead after two.
The Mavs were able to shake off the long ride’s ‘bus legs’ and make a go of it in the third, scoring three goals in a six minute span at the beginning of the third to bring Milford within one, 5-4.
The Mavs kept storming, but were unable to come up the the equalizer over the next seven minutes of action, before PN scored to take a two goal lead with 5 minutes remaining.
Milford pulled goalie Hunter Bartholomew for the extra attacker with just over three minutes to go, resulting in Joey Puz’s second goal of the game to bring The Mavs back within one. But the Huskies withstood Milford’s final minute onslaught to hold on for the win.
Puz scored two goals, one on the power play and one with the extra attacker, while Mitchell Balaka and Brent Anderson also scored, Kazuma Bowring had 2 assists, and Jacob Briggs, Andrew Thiele and Anderson each had an assist.
Hunter Batholomew was solid in net with 37 saves while his counterpart Peter Todd made 13 saves.
