The Mavs (12-10) again stumbled out of the gate on a festive Senior Day, but ended up shaking off the effects of a snow day and a disappointing canceled Friday practice, before churning up the ice sheet with six straight goals for an fun, Holiday like, 6-1 victory over the Alliance Hockey Club (12-8-1), a D1 unified team comprised of Almont, Goodrich, Imlay City and North Branch.
Alliance’s Dakota Lehman scored early in the first to stake the Alliance to a one goal lead, which held up after one period.
Before the Zam started the cut and flood for the second period, Milford honored our 13 Seniors and their parents in a nice Senior Day Ceremony.
The Mavs weren’t going to be denied on Senior Day, trailing by one after the extended break, as Milford’s Ben Kozar knotted it one minute in to the second, from a sweet feed from Senior Tyler Conklin after Conklin’s relentless pressure created an Alliance turnover with another helper going to Kaz Bowring.
Sophmore Tyler Tori followed with a power play snipe off of a clean OZone draw won by Kevin Mozel to give Milford the lead. Three miniutes later, Senior Jacob Briggs battled two Alliance defenders in the crease area before making a patient move on Alliance tendy Max Hubbell, staking The Mavs to a 3-1 lead with assists to Seniors Mitchell Balaka and Jack Chaldecott, completing the scoring through two periods.
Milford started strong in the third to seemingly put the game away with goals from Senior Brent Anderson and Sam Hewitt, with assists going to Briggs on both and Anderson and Hewitt assisting on each other’s goals, for a comfortable 5-1 lead with 11:00 remaining.
Milford Senior Daniel Onofrio put the game out of reach with a rebound battle goal after getting blasted by Alliance Captain and Elite Brigade high school off season standout, defensemen Kurtis Winget, with 6:12 to go with assists to Kozar and Balaka.
Senior Nate Brennan completed the scoring with helpers from Seniors Daine Albrecht and Henry Combs as time expired in the third. We’re still waiting word from Toronto if the puck crossed the goal line before time expired, but T. Hewitt, a volunteer goal judge who usually works the South end goal, confirmed that the puck crossed the goal line well before the buzzer.
Senior Chase (Bags) Tabor picked up the win while starting and playing half of the game and making 9 saves, while Senior Hunter Bartholomew played the second half and stopped all 12 shots he faced. Alliance’s Hubbell finished with 38 saves.
The Mavs board a chartered bus Friday for a 7:30PM game Friday night against Byron Center at the Southside Arena and a Saturday matinee 3PM tilt against Rockford at the Cedar Rock Sportsplex.
Congratulations Senior Parents on your student/athletes achievements and Thank You for exposing them to the great game of hockey and for your commitment and dedication over the last several years. Your sons are fortunate young men, and even though they don’t tell you very often, they are thankful and appreciative of everything you’ve done.
