Sophomore Ben Kozar led the Mavs with three goals, hockey’s Hat Trick, to a 4-1 victory over the Notre Dame Prep Academy in a rematch of ND’s 4-3 win over Milford over a month ago, in the first round of the State Playoffs.
The Mavs struck first on a power play goal, Kozar with a back door snipe on a sweet feed from Mav DMan Mitchell Balaka and a secondary assist from Sophomore Forward Tyler Tori halfway through the first.
Kozar netted his second at the 6:57 mark of the second for a 2-0 Milford lead, with an assist from hardworking Tyler Conklin, who played with a heavy heart as did his cousin Henry, after their Family lost the Patriarch of their Family, beloved Grandpa Henry Everett Combs Friday, whose visitation was Monday and funeral Tuesday morning at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Highland.
The hard fighting and shorthanded playerwise Irish’s Will Caton scored for ND with 9:50 to go in the third, bringing ND within one. But Milford’s Tyler Tori answered less than a minute later, with assists to Kozar and Conklin to give the Mavs a two goal cushion.
Kozar scored his third from Jacob Quinn with just over a minute left in the third to finish off the scoring, propelling Milford into the Pre-Regional Championship against one of the State’s best in any division, the Country Day YellowJackets, who mercied Walled Lake Western 9-0 after two periods in their first round game.
Hunter Bartholomew was solid again with 27 saves for the W while his Notre Dame counterpart Michael Conroy made 32 saves.
The Mavs play Country Day Wednesday 7PM at the Southfield Civic Arena in the Pre-Regional final. Warmups are at 6:40 with gametime at 7PM.
Country Day has only lost two games this season and is ranked in the top 10 of all Michigan high school hockey teams and is a favorite to win States in D3.
