Game Recap

The Mavs woke up for an early breakfast Saturday morning hosted by the Elks Lodge with Lakeland, Big Rapids and Sault Ste. Marie, the other three teams participating in the Soo Elks Showcase this past weekend in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
After breakfast, the team headed to the Chi Mukwa Arena for a 1PM tilt against the Cardinals from Big Rapids.
After a scoreless, well played defensively first period, Big Rapids’ Cam Massy got the skunk out of the box early in the second for a 1-0 Cardinal lead which stood after two periods.
The Mavs, after a sluggish first two periods, turned up the pressure on All-State Goalie Fletcher Bolda, but to no avail. But with Mav tendy Hunter Bartholomew pulled for the extra attacker, the Mavs finally lit the lamp with a power play goal, Andrew Thiele from his buddy Mitchell Balaka with only 42 seconds to go in the game to tie it and send it to OT.
But the Cardinal’s River Spedowski knocked in a rebound in the third minute of OT for the Cardinal win.
Bartholomew made 24 saves for Milford while Bolda made 25 for Big Rapids.
“We didn’t play as well Saturday as we did Friday. It’s not easy going on the road and sleeping in a strange environment, but we wanted to give the Team the Junior Hockey/College experience with the bus trip and the overnight stay,” said Coach Gagnon.
The Mavs were treated to a Soo Eagles Junior Hockey game Saturday night at the famed Pullar Stadium before returning to Milford Sunday afternoon.
“Our guys represented Milford with class all weekend. Now it’s time to get a big win,” said first year Assistant Ian Wiljanen.
The Mavs host league foe and crosstown rival Lakeland this Wednesday 8PM at Hartland in the Mav’s season home opener. It will be exciting.

Game Recap

Marie Blue Devils, Big Rapids Cardinals, coached by Red Wings Head Coach Jeff Blashill’s brother Tim, rival Lakeland Eagles and your Mavericks for a weekend of hockey in the Upper Peninsula.
Milford squared off against the hometown Soo squad in the marquee match up Friday night following the early game in which Lakeland beat Big Rapids 3-0.
The always tough Blue Devils took the early lead on an even strength goal by Aiden Armstrong at the 9:11 mark of the first. The Mavs answered with Andrew Thiele scoring from Tyler Conklin and Ben Kozar at 4:19 of the first, and Brent Anderson from Sam Hewitt and Kevin Mozel less than a minute later to stake the Mavs to a 2-1 lead after one.

After nearly 16 minutes of exciting hockey action, the Soo’s Matt Thurston scored with under a minute remaining in the third to give the Blue Devils the lead. The Mavs pulled tendy Hunter Bartholomew, but were unable to get the equalizer.
Bartholomew played well while making 32 saves on 35 shots while the Soo’s Logan Raffaele made 25 saves on the Mav’s 27 shots.
“We played well against a very good Soo team. Our compete level was good and our composure was excellent with only two penalties,” said Coach Gagnon. “I thought our defense played great and Hunter gave us a chance to win.”

Game Recap

The Mavs lost a tough one 5-4 to league foe Walled Lake Western in their Tuesday night Lakes Valley Conference opener at KVIH.
Milford took a 2-0 first period lead on a shorthanded goal by Sam Hewitt from Brent Anderson and an even strength goal from Jacob Briggs from Ben Kozar and Tyler Conklin.
The Mavs made it 3-0 just 40 seconds into the second, Kozar from Briggs.
But undisciplined play resulted in back to back Power Play goals for Western, to pull them within one just three minutes into the second.
The Mavs answered with a Power Play goal of their own, Jack Chaldecott from Briggs and Conklin halfway through the second, only to have Western score another Power Play goal with a minute remaining in the second to pull within one 4-3.
Western completed the scoring with two late goals in the third for the win.
Shots were even for the game 28-28, despite the Mavs amassing ten penalties and playing nearly an entire period shorthanded, a couple kills of the 5 on 3 variety.
Hunter Bartholomew made 23 saves for Milford, while his goal tending counterpart Sean Lickfold made 24 for Western.
“You’re not going to win many games with ten penalties,” as second year Milford coach Dennis Gagnon stated the obvious.
The Mavs travel to Sault Ste. Marie this weekend to play in the Soo Eagles Showcase with an 8PM clash against the always tough Soo High Blue Devils Friday night and a Saturday 1PM matinee tilt against the Big Rapids Cardinals.
The other team in the Showcase is local rival Lakeland, who Milford opens at Home with on November 22 at 8PM.

Game Recap

Happy New Hockey Season!
The Mavs traveled to Novi to face KLAA perennial powerhouse Novi Wildcats Wednesday evening.
In a hard fought scrimmage game that had no bearing on league or overall standings, the Mavs came up a goal short losing 3-2.
Novi scored twice in the first to take a 2-0 lead before Nate Brennan scored from Henry Combs with one second left in the period to pull the Mavs within one.
The Mavs came out stomping in the second and scored in the first minute, Brent Anderson from Zoom Bowring to tie the game.
But Novi netted the game winner late in the third period for the win.
Hunter Bartholomew played well between the pipes in his Maverick debut, making 26 saves on 28 shots through two periods. Second year Mav tendy Chase (BAGS) Tabor made 11 saves on 12 shots during his third period stint.
Novi outshot the Mavs 40-30 for the night.
“Novi fared well against some very tough competetion this past Fall off season, so this was a good test for us,” said second year Mav coach Dennis Gagnon. “I thought we played well and cohesively considering it was only our first game.”
The Mavs kick the regular season off Tuesday November 14 against Lakes Valley Conference league foe Walled Lake Western at 7PM.
“Our goal is to win the inaugural conference championship, and it all starts Tuesday,” said new Assistant Coach Ian Wiljanen.
Please come on out and support your Hockey Mavs in their quest for the league title.

Milford places 4th in first LVC Conference Swimming Championship

The Milford Girls’ Swim and Dive team had a great showing at the first ever Lakes Valley Conference Swimming Championship held this past Friday and Saturday at South Lyon East High School. The Mavericks placed fourth overall out of the seven combined swim teams with a total score of 190.5.

Emily Costanzo and Riley Kennedy qualified for the State meet in their individual events and Makenzie Dopierala placed third in Diving. Seniors Lauren Tulpa and Bella Catenacci had the best swims of their careers and the majority of the team did as well so it was a amazing way to end the season for all of them”.

50 Freestyle: Rylie Kennedy 25.35 4th Place – All Conference and State Qualifying Time for Division 2
